Learning to balance food habits Ayurvedically is a step-by-step process, best done in small "bites." As dis¬cussed in chapter 6, so often the word dieting conjures up feelings and mem¬ories of deprivation, which is a state of being that our beings will probably do the utmost to avoid! In Ayurvedic Balancing, we replace those food choices and habits that do not nourish and satisfy us with ones that do; in other words, we learn to seek a healthy abundance that asks us to eat great-tasting, satisfying food and get enough rest and relaxation from the hustle and bustle of modern life.
When we begin to balance our mind-body consti¬tutions, we start to nurture those aspects that may be aggravated and pay attention to those aspects and tendencies that often lead to a lack of well-being. By consciously feeding ourselves—on all levels, not just with food— we begin to bring out more constructive aspects that help us achieve our weight and stress management goals.
A typical Western fat-loss diet usually focuses on restricting food choice and limiting calories. As we have seen in chapter 7, our spirits are more likely to be motivated by abundance rather than limitation, and a restric¬tive type of diet by its very nature reduces motivation because it causes feel¬ings of deprivation and emotional hunger. This kind of dieting relies on willpower, which is not a self-sustaining mechanism for behavioral change.
