Psycho-social changes. Adolescence is a period of tendency from the protection and security of parents to a mature adult. Nutrient Needs and Recommended Dietary Allowances During adolescence body grows to attain adult's body stature, thus requirements of all the nutrients are high for girls and boys.
(1) Energy. Calorific needs increase with metabolic demands of growth and energy expenditure. Energy needs vary among girls and boys. Growth and physical activity contribute significantly to the total energy need. ICMR Committee suggested the energy requirements of adolescents on the basis of ideal weight for age. The calorie needs of boys is higher than girls.
(2) Proteins. Protein needs represent 12-14% of energy intake. Protein requirements calculated by the factorial method procedure adopted by FAO/WHO/UNO Expert Consultation, to obtain physiological requirements, the factorial value is increased by 50% and an allowance of 25% has been added to arrive at the safe level of intake. Since the mixed dietary protein of Indian diets has a NPU of 65, the dietary protein requirements has been calculated by using this figure. The body weight standards of well-to-do Indian children have been used in arrive at the total daily allowance of proteins for children at different ages.
(3) Minerals. The requirement of calcium prerscribed by ICMR is same for girls and boys. 500-600 mg of calcium is needed during adolescence, much more than an adult. For mineralization of bones 150 mg of calcium retained each day. This period of intensive growth is also accompanied by increase in blood volume and muscle mass. In the girls, the onset of mensuration leads to extra losses of iron through menstrual blood loss. All these factors combine to increase the iron requirements during adolescence to much higher levels compared to the pre-adolescence years.
